Mobile Software Engineer, Android

You will be part of the Rides product innovation group building the next generation of transport solutions for our customers.

We launched the Rides team two years ago with the goal of becoming the best way to get to and from the airport. We started offering airport transfers on booking.com while also building our direct business, rideways.com. We are now rapidly expanding Rides as well as building additional new transport products to get our customers from A to B in the best way possible.

You will be based in London, with occasional travel to our head office in Manchester. And possibly to our parent company based in Amsterdam.

Tech

We are building a culture that promotes excellent engineering practices, has a focus on testing, is working towards a continuous deployment pipeline, and, encourages code reviews, pairing and technical design discussions. Keeping up to date with best practice is essential.

We have an iOS app and an Android app will follow soon.

On the backend we use Java 8 and Spring Boot. The next step is to build out the backend taking a cloud native approach based on Kubernetes and Microservices following, but not limited to, Twelve-Factor App principles and the Reactive Manifesto. We’ll deploy on AWS and expect to use other cloud providers in other territories.

For testing, amongst other things, we use Cucumber, XCTest, JUnit, Selenium, Appium and Postman.

We are looking for someone who

  • Technical knowledge
    • Has a very good understanding of native Android development
    • Is confident creating high quality UIs (working with UX and UI Designers)
    • Understands how to create stable and performant native apps, taking in to account the constraints of mobile devices
    • Can build robust integrations with backend services
    • Has experience working with embedded databases
