Engineering is a multi-skilled group of nearly 250 people responsible for providing the technology to enable the Rentalcars.com business.  It is a fast paced, dynamic, exciting and driven environment providing services on a 24x7 basis.  We provide all the touch points for our online customer experience through a market leading app, a great web site and all the software services and business systems to manage our customers and products. Our goal is to create a great customer experience across all platforms which help us deliver growth for our business.

Where we are going

  • A full continuous delivery pipeline using Bamboo, Git and Artifactory
  • Cross functional agile teams who own their products and operate in a DevOps environment
  • Data driven decisions using Kibana, Hadoop, monitoring, Big Data, MI and MVT testing

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a superb and enthusiastic Head of Engineering – Product Delivery (Manchester) who will lead a large team of Software Engineers to deliver our Products.  The overall team is c.180 split into 9 groups each led by a with each section led by a Software Engineering Managers who in turn have multiple Engineering teams to lead.  This is a senior and pivotal leadership role and the successful candidate will demonstrate the experience and expertise required with regards to the energy and passion to lead, motivate and inspire the team through a passion for technology and engineering excellence.  We are looking for someone to build a high velocity, high quality software engineering delivery machine.

Your skills and experience should align to the following:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading multiple Engineering teams at scale (60+ people)
  • Solid understanding of Agile delivery
  • Demonstrable experience of working in Agile environments
  • Solid understanding and experience of using a servant leadership approach when the leading teams
  • Experience of situation leadership and engineering coaching
  • Solid technical background and understanding of Software Engineering including:
    • Modern software engineering practices including Continuous Delivery
    • Software architecture and design patterns/frameworks
    • Database technologies such as MySql, SQL Server
    • Web architecture including web services, SOA and distributed systems
    • Testing being core to the Engineering of software including NFRs and TDD
  • Advanced skill and ability to coach/guide/influence others in developing software
  • Must have a software engineering background

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Lead, inspire and motivate a large Engineering team at scale
  • Engineering delivery, quality and practices within your team
  • Realisation of the software architecture for the products your Engineering teams own
  • Delivery of the Software Engineering strategic objectives
  • Lead on the programme for Engineering Excellence including coaching and mentoring the team
  • Lead on developing engineering talent in the team
  • Lead on fostering a great engineering culture who innovate, work as a team and celebrate success
  • Collaborate with Product Owners, Architects and your team to shape the pipeline of features
  • Evangelise best practice, creativity and innovation across the team to deliver great work
  • Adhere to the default principles for Architecture, quality and non-functional requirements
  • Contribute to the evolution of best practices across the department
  • Write, review and take responsibility for clear, concise and comprehensive technical documentation
  • Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies and can apply these to a variety of projects as applicable
  • Operate in DevOps environment including on call escalations
