Engineering is a multi-skilled group of over 150 people responsible for providing the technology to enable the Rentalcars.com business.  It is a fast paced, dynamic, exciting and driven environment providing services on a 24x7 basis.  We provide all the touch points for our online customer experience through a market leading app, a great web site and all the software services and business systems to manage our customers and products.   Our goal is to create a great customer experience across all platforms which help us deliver growth for our business.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple Engineering teams within one or more Product Groups
  • Lead by example by taking ownership, being proactive and collaborating
  • Get into the technical detail where required to lead, coach, support and mentor the team
  • Be a great technical partner for the Product team and wider business
  • Embed and lead on Agile practices and values within the organisation
  • Take the lead on the design, build and delivery of high quality solutions
  • Work with Architects and Stakeholders to define and shape the solutions
  • Line manage a team of Engineers
  • Lead and coach Engineers
  • Evangelise best practice, creativity and innovation across the team to deliver great work
  • Work with peers and the team to deliver on the Software Engineering strategic objectives
  • Adhere to the default principles for Architecture, quality and non-functional requirements
  • Collaborate with the team and others to deliver high quality solutions
  • Learn new technologies and keep abreast of existing technologies and be able to apply these to a variety of projects as applicable
  • Work with Product Owners to define and build a pipeline of features
  • Contribute to the evolution of best practices across the department
  • Write, review and take responsibility for clear, concise and comprehensive technical documentation
  • Support live products in a DevOps environment

Who we are looking for

We are looking for a superb and enthusiastic Software Engineering Manager who will take the lead on engineering brilliant solutions and shaping our new future.  We expect you to have the energy and passion to proactively lead multiple teams of engineers that use a range of technologies and have a solid understanding of modern engineering practices. Your skills and experience should align to the following:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading one or more teams of Engineers
  • Solid technical depth in Software Engineering principles including design patterns and OO
  • Demonstrable experience of working in an Agile software development function and leading teams to shared success
  • Proficient in delivering good quality clean code using Java, JavaScript or PHP, able to go hands on with development teams when required
  • Strong experience of Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery and Agile practices
  • Advanced skill and ability to coach/guide/influence others in developing software
  • Proficient in the use of database technologies such as MySql, SQL Server
  • Highly proficient with web services, APIs ideally REST based and SOA
  • A solid understanding how the web works starting at the request through to the response
  • Quality first mind-set for writing code using techniques such as TDD, BDD or Agile

Other beneficial skills

  • Good understanding of servant leadership approach to leading teams
  • Work knowledge and experience of AWS
  • Proficiency with some/all of the following: HTML 5, AJAX, Bootstrapping, XHTML, HTTP, JSON, XML
  • Good understanding of styling and applying design to web pages using CSS
  • Good understanding of asynchronous systems and messaging for example RabbitMQ
  • Proficient with JavaScript frameworks such as Node.js, React.js and Angular.js
  • Experience with the design and execution effective functional tests
